رَّبِّ اَعُوۡذُ بِکَ مِنۡ ھَمَزٰتِ الشَّیٰطِیۡنِ ۙ واَعُوۡذُ بِکَ رَبِّ اَنۡ یَّحۡضُرُوۡن ؕ۔
بِسۡمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِۙ۔
Despairing of Allah's Mercy is Forbidden.
God—the Lord of all the galaxies—is Most Merciful and Most Compassionate. God grants peace to those who believe in His signs, and He has undertaken to show them mercy in both this world and the Hereafter. Therefore, despairing of Allah's mercy is forbidden. Only disbelievers despair of His mercy.
وَاِذَا جَآءَكَ الَّذِيۡنَ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاٰيٰتِنَا فَقُلۡ سَلٰمٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡ كَتَبَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلٰى نَفۡسِهِ الرَّحۡمَةَ ۙ ﴿۵۴﴾
Q-06:54And when those who believe in Our signs come to you, say, "Peace be upon you! Your Lord has taken upon Himself the responsibility of showing mercy."
وَلَا تَايۡــَٔسُوۡا مِنۡ رَّوۡحِ اللّٰهِؕ اِنَّهٗ لَا يَايۡــَٔسُ مِنۡ رَّوۡحِ اللّٰهِ اِلَّا الۡقَوۡمُ الۡكٰفِرُوۡنَ ﴿۸۷﴾
Q-12:87And never despair of the mercy and help of God. Indeed, none despairs of the mercy of God except the disbelievers.
قَالُوۡا بَشَّرۡنٰكَ بِالۡحَـقِّ فَلَا تَكُنۡ مِّنَ الۡقٰنِطِيۡنَ ﴿۵۵﴾ قَالَ وَمَنۡ يَّقۡنَطُ مِنۡ رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهٖۤ اِلَّا الضَّآلُّوۡنَ ﴿۵۶﴾
Q-15:55-56The angels said, “We have given you the glad tidings in truth, so do not be among those who despair.” (55) Abraham (A.S) said, who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who have gone astray?” (56)
The reason for despairing of God's mercy.
Despairing of Allah's mercy is a sign of disbelief. Even among Muslims, those with weak faith far outnumber true believers. Allah the Almighty describes this thus: "And most of them do not believe in Allah except while associating partners with Him."
There is only one reason for this weakness of faith: we lack true belief in the Quran. Muslims in non-Arab countries, in particular, recite the Quran but have no desire to understand God's commandments—nor do the religious scholars in those regions seek to explain them. Consequently, the faith of people in non-Arab lands is often tainted by *shirk* (associating partners with God). Remarkably, the Muslims themselves are unaware that they are committing *shirk*.
وَمَاۤ اَكۡثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوۡ حَرَصۡتَ بِمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ ﴿۱۰۳﴾
And most people will not believe, no matter how strongly you desire it.
وَكَاَيِّنۡ مِّنۡ اٰيَةٍ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ يَمُرُّوۡنَ عَلَيۡهَا وَهُمۡ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضُوۡنَ ﴿۱۰۵﴾ وَمَا يُؤۡمِنُ اَكۡثَرُهُمۡ بِاللّٰهِ اِلَّا وَهُمۡ مُّشۡرِكُوۡنَ ﴿۱۰۶﴾
Q-12:105-106And how many signs there are in the heavens and the earth that they pass by, yet they turn away from them. (105) And most of them do not believe in Allah except while associating partners with Him. (106)
فَلَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ ﴿۳۸﴾ وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَۙ ﴿۳۹﴾ اِنَّهٗ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُوۡلٍ كَرِيۡمٍۚ ۙ ﴿۴۰﴾ وَّمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرٍؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ ﴿۴۱﴾ وَلَا بِقَوۡلِ كَاهِنٍؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَؕ ﴿۴۲﴾
Q-69:38-42So I swear by that which you see, (38) and by that which you do not see, (39) that this Quran is surely the word of a noble angel (Gabriel); (40) and it is not the word of a poet—(yet) you believe so little; (41) nor is it the word of a soothsayer—(yet) you take so little heed. (42)
Divine mercy for the disbeliever who repents.
Those who abandon the path of disbelief and come to believe in God and His signs should not lose hope. God promises to open for them blessings from the heavens and the earth and to forgive their sins.
قُلْ لِّـلَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اِنۡ يَّنۡتَهُوۡا يُغۡفَرۡ لَهُمۡ مَّا قَدۡ سَلَفَۚ ﴿۳۸﴾
Tell those who have disbelieved: if they desist, what has passed will be forgiven.
وَلَوۡ اَنَّ اَهۡلَ الۡقُرٰٓى اٰمَنُوۡا وَاتَّقَوۡا لَـفَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ بَرَكٰتٍ مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ ﴿۹۶﴾
Q-07:96And if the people of those towns had believed and had been pious, we would have opened up for them blessings from the heavens and the earth.
Sinners must not despair of God’s mercy.
Those who commit sins out of ignorance or a lack of knowledge, and subsequently seek forgiveness from God, will find Him to be Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. God declares that He will not forgive the sins of *shirk* (associating partners with Him) and *kufr* (disbelief) committed by His servants; however, He may forgive any other sin He wills. Therefore, everything hinges on seeking forgiveness with firm faith and remaining steadfast in the resolve not to repeat that sin.
قُلۡ يٰعِبَادِىَ الَّذِيۡنَ اَسۡرَفُوۡا عَلٰٓى اَنۡفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُوۡا مِنۡ رَّحۡمَةِ اللّٰهِ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَغۡفِرُ الذُّنُوۡبَ جَمِيۡعًا ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الۡغَفُوۡرُ الرَّحِيۡمُ ﴿۵۳﴾
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Surely, He alone is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
وَمَنۡ يَّعۡمَلۡ سُوۡٓءًا اَوۡ يَظۡلِمۡ نَفۡسَهٗ ثُمَّ يَسۡتَغۡفِرِ اللّٰهَ يَجِدِ اللّٰهَ غَفُوۡرًا رَّحِيۡمًا ﴿۱۱۰﴾
Q-04:110Whoever does an evil deed or wrongs himself, then seeks forgiveness from Allah, he will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
